Civic & Cultural

Posted

Where was the Fountain Hills Civic and Cultural Association at the recent mayoral debate? The Chamber proudly announced the partnership, but then FHCCA seemed to disappear after opening remarks. SRP took over as moderator; not sufficiently prepared, mind you. And the clock? Confusing.

Where were the “civic” and “cultural” (FHCCA) questions? What about downtown greening, fountain, parks, community garden, Dark Skies? Arts and crafts festivals, award-winning theater productions, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Parade, marathon runs, Stroll In the Glow? Partnerships with schools, organizations, public safety, Sister Cities? Why weren’t there questions about these major facets that attract and promote Fountain Hills across the Valley, country and worldwide?

What followed was a debate about development. Almost every pre-planned question and most of the audience questions “chosen” were focused on development. Yates must have been quietly, actually loudly, celebrating that focus. You see, Yates’ plan is all about development, his business. Thanks to the Chamber, he got his wish (realyates.com).

Has anybody moved to Fountain Hills because of manufacturing or major industry? Most moved here because of our beautiful surroundings, signature Fountain Park, civic and cultural amenities and our “small town” feel. They knew they’d commute or work here. Where were the questions about that focus and future? What a disservice to Fountain Hills residents!

Given two-thirds of voters resoundingly rejected the property tax, overwhelmingly due to lack of transparency and trust among Yates and some current council members, this dictated an open and robust discussion of maintaining all we love about our small town versus trying to make it something it’s not nor can be.
