Ward: Fountain Hills needs a movie theater

Posted

Attention, master planners and economic developers! Mr. Towne may be on to something here, and I’d venture to guess it’s not just teenagers who would welcome a movie theater within our town limits.

Grownup renters and homeowners, too, may welcome an air-conditioned cinematic sanctuary during the deadly hot summers. Someplace with state-of-the-art projection and sound. Where one can hear and feel the “VROOOOOOM” through Dolby Atmos in a soundproof auditorium, rather than as noise pollution off of Saguaro Blvd. at 5 a.m.

Speak up, young filmgoers! You’re much more likely to prove there’s demand for a local cinema than the retirees and middle-aged cinephiles like myself who attend weekday matinees while you’re in school.

Even our elected officials have to drive 30 minutes to see a movie. With a cinema in town to patronize, “Beetlejuice 2” and “Mission: Impossible 8” ticket sales would rake in tax dollars being siphoned away by cinemas in Scottsdale and Mesa. So would “Twisters,” I suppose, but have any of you really been waiting 28 years for a follow-up to “Twister?”
