Memorial Day to be recognized in Fountain Hills

Federal holiday is May 27

Posted

As has been traditional in Fountain Hills, the local Veterans Service Organizations (VSO) will hold a Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony on Memorial Day Monday, May 27, at 9 a.m. at the Fountain Hills Veterans Memorial on El Lago Blvd in Fountain Park.

Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7507, American Legion Post 58 and Marine Corps League Detachment 1439 participate jointly in the annual commemorative ceremony with the lead rotating between the Posts.

This year, the ceremony is led and organized by American Legion Post 58.

Upon completion of the commemorative ceremony, all guests and participants are invited to American Legion Post 58 for coffee and donuts.

The keynote speaker will be Waya Schiller, 1SG Arizona National Guard (ret).

American Legion Post 58’s Senior Vice Commander Ritz-Taylor Sadang is the Master of Ceremonies with members of the other VSOs having supporting roles.

Taps Across America

Following the ceremony at 3 p.m., Town of Fountain Hills Vice Mayor Brenda J. Kalivianakis will perform Taps at the Veterans Memorial joined by narrator and Fountain Hills resident David Lovrak who will explain the program.

Kalivianakis will be joined by trumpeter Debbie Fisher, trumpeter Tom Furr and saxophonist Bonnie Furr.

As a nationally recognized ceremony, Taps Across America takes a moment on Memorial Day to pause and remember those who honorably served in the Armed Forces with a nationwide sounding of Taps, the national song of remembrance.

All instrumentalists are invited to join in participating in the 2024 Taps Across America event sponsored by Taps for Veterans.

Both ceremonies are open to the general public and everyone is invited. The wearing of uniforms (partial or complete), organizational clothing, Red Shirt Friday shirts and/or patriotic attire is appropriate as is the wearing of Buddy Poppies, according to a press release by Boe James, VFW Post 7507 adjutant.

Memorial Day and Veterans Day

Memorial Day should not be confused with Veterans Day.

Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives while in service to the United States during peace and war, a solemn day to reflect on veterans and military personnel who are deceased.

Veterans Day is a day to honor the service of any person who has served in or is serving in the U.S. military.

Those who cannot attend one or both events are invited to take a moment to remember all those who have died to protect the many freedoms that Americans enjoy throughout their lives.
