Fountain Hills High School wrestling titan Leyton Kauffman has successfully secured his spot in the upcoming state tournament and then some.
The grappling Falcons took part in the state sectional qualifier at Mogollon High School last week, where only Kauffman qualified for state.
Kauffman will wrestle in the state tournament at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott tomorrow, Feb. 7.
Despite Kauffman being the only Fountain Hills wrestler to quialfy for state, head coach Luke Salzman said he had hopes for others on his younger team.
“With our young team we were hoping that a couple of our younger wrestlers could sneak in on that third of fourth spot and qualify,” Salzman said. “The young Falcons had some good matches and a couple good wins, but came up short and did not qualify. Next year I think all of these guys returning will have a year or two of experience and all can make a good run at it.”
Salzman said he is excited to see how the state tournament goes for Kauffman, who has already beat last year’s state champ a few times.
“(Kauffman) once again dominated the 182-pound weight class and ended up taking first place,” Salzman said. “Kauffman recorded two falls and then beat last year’s state champ, Andres Jimenez, 12-5. This is the third time this season Kauffman has beaten him.”
