The Fountain Hills High Schools girls basketball team dominated its two games this past week with decisive wins.

The Lady Falcons’ first game of the week was against Coronado on Jan. 15, where FHHS earned a victory at 44-18.

The second game of the week was at home against Arizona College Prep, with the Lady Falcons handily winning that competition by a final score of 41-11.

Fountain Hills only had one game this week, yesterday, Jan. 22, against American Leadership Academy Gilbert.

Head coach Mandy Baca said she used this past week’s games as a chance to switch up the plays the team has been running this season.

“These were two good games to get into a flow,” Baca said. “We tried out trapping the offense in the half court. I’ve had it worked up since break but this was a good way to put it into gameplay and be able to get beat a couple times, with that being okay.”

Baca also got a chance to have her younger players put in more minutes on the court in this week’s games.

“We were able to get everyone in this week, including some of the ninth graders,” Baca said. “Down the road, having the younger players get experience is going to be really helpful. You never know when one of your top players might foul out and you’ll need to play one of your younger kids.”

Baca worried that, with her top players on the bench and FHHS having such a huge lead in both games, the girls wouldn’t stay focused on the competition at hand.

“There is a balance with these types of games where you have to stay focused but you also don’t want to run up the score,” Baca explained. “Both our players on the court and on the bench had their heads in the game, though. I heard some of our top players on the bench talking not about random stuff, but things happening in the game.”

Going into the final games of the season, Baca said she is confident in the Lady Falcons’ game plan.
