Boys basketball bests Coronado, AZ College Prep

It was a great week for the Fountain Hills High School boys basketball with strong wins against Coronado and Arizona College Prep.

The first game of the week was at Coronado on Jan. 15, where the Falcons won by a narrow margin, 58-55.

The second game of the week was on Jan. 17 at home against Arizona College Prep. FHHS claimed another close competition, 49-41.

Fountain Hills only had one game this week and it was yesterday, Jan. 22, against the American Leadership Academy Gilbert.

Head coach Jeff Bonner described his team’s game against Coronado as “a hard-fought battle.”

Coronado has smaller players than FHHS’ squad, but Bonner said that made them more difficult to guard.

“Their (Coronado) heart and hustle made up for what they didn’t have in size,” Bonner said. “It was a challenge matching up with their team. It tested our will, to really want to get a stop on your guy and not let him get past you.”

Bonner said his team never gave up, even when they were down by 12 points.

“The guys never quit,” Bonner said. “We called some time outs to refocus and revamp. We changed a couple things and the team finished better than they started.”

The Falcons played Arizona College Prep next, a game Bonner called “another nail biter.” Luckily, the Falcons were able to hold their lead through most of the game.

“We came out on the court with a decent energy,” Bonner said.

Bonner has struggled to get his team to stick to an offensive game plan all season but, in their game against Arizona College Prep, the Falcons successfully ran two.

“I keep encouraging the guys, ‘run what we run,’” Bonner said. “Do what we do first and then you can break later on in the game. If you get the other team used to an offense and then you change it up, that can catch them by surprise and throw them off.”

With the season approaching its final games, Bonner said he is setting his goals on the team winning their last game.

“If that game is the championship, great,” Bonner said. “But we are going to win it.”
