Getting creative at Camp Invention

Fountain Hills played host to Camp Invention this summer, with local youngsters taking part in a week’s worth of activities powered by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

According to the Camp Invention website, the program aims to give children “the opportunity to become innovators through teamwork and immersive, hands-on creative problem-solving.”

This year’s camp, called “Supercharged,” tasked participants with four themed challenges to tackle throughout the session.

First up was an activity called Innovation Force, which had kids team up and take on the role of superheroes doing battle with Plagiarizer, a supervillain who goes around stealing the best ideas in the world. To combat his dastardly deeds, local superheroes were tasked with creating their own inventions that would help better mankind.

The Deeps Sea Mystery activity asked participants to pretend they had been lost at sea while on a deep-sea discovery mission. Their job was to create tools to help them survive on a deserted island, as well as underwater equipment that would help them find their way back home.

The Farm Tech activity had campers work with “Bot-ANN-E,” a programmable robot that helped them learn about everything from coding to maximizing time and profits while running a farm as a business.

Finally, there was the DIY Orbot activity. Working with circuit boards, motors, gears and more, the kids built a robot throughout the camp that could take on increasingly complex challenges.
