Thomas: Concerning statistics tied to recent petitions

Posted

At the April 2 Town Council meeting, during public comment on regular agenda item 9A, Resolution 2024-15, directing the Town Attorney to not oppose Maricopa County Superior Court Action No. CV2024-004218, Crystal Cavanaugh stated, “…almost 20% of the registered voters signed petitions to get this on the November ballot…over 1,800 residents.”

An article in the March 6 edition of the Fountain Hills Times Independent stated “representatives … filed the referendum paperwork including 1,816 signatures on petition 2024-01 (apartments).”

The Maricopa County Recorder’s voter registration site shows 17,864 Active registered voters in Fountain Hills.

1,816 petition signers divided by 17,864 Active registered voters in Fountain Hills is 10.17%. Given the math, Ms. Cavanaugh’s contention that almost 20% of registered voters signed the petitions appears wildly exaggerated, by almost a factor of two.
