New Year brings more activities to Community Garden

Posted

Chocofin Chocolatiers Lou and Denise Mirabella will host a “Chocolate and Music in the Garden” event from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20, in the Fountain Hills Community Garden.

Guests will sample several chocolates, including fresh-made craft chocolate served straight from the grinders.

A lover of music and a musician, Lou Mirabella hired SoSco Flute & Guitar Duo to perform. A silent auction also will be held.

Guests are encouraged to bring coffee to enjoy with the chocolates.

Admission is $5 and includes samples of chocolate. Tickets are available at Chocofin Chocolatier, 13404 N. La Montana Drive; West USA Realty, 16622 E. Avenue of the Fountains; Fountain Hills Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, 13620 N. Saguaro Blvd., suite 100, and Fountain Fashions, 16650 E. Palisades Blvd., suite 152.

As an avid gardener, Lou Mirabella said he was excited when he heard about the community garden.

“I’ve had vegetable gardens all of my adult life. When I moved here from Connecticut in 1994, I installed two raised bed gardens in my yard. Since then, I’ve had the best and most productive gardens ever.”

Mirabella said he researched the two growing seasons, soil preparation and irrigation. He credits his abundant production to his findings.

Other scheduled events at the garden this month are:

*Today, Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 5 to 6 p.m. Join other gardeners to discuss tips and successes.

*Saturday, Jan. 13, 2 to 3:30 p.m., Garden Expectations and Etiquette class in the Pima Hopi Room in the Community Center.

Master Gardeners Rita Applegate and Joy Hubbard will discuss garden behavior. The class provides a fresh start for members and garden protocol.

*Saturday, Jan. 27, 10 a.m. to noon; Volunteers will amend the soil for the next growing season, install needed irrigation in the raised beds and perform general maintenance tasks.
