The Club in Fountain Hills held one of its many “Trailblazers” road trips to the Titan Missile Museum and San Xavier del Bac Mission in Green Valley, Ariz., on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

A total of 16 Club members and spouses were greeted by museum staff and treated to an introductory film about the missile site.

The group enjoyed a 45-minute tour of the formerly restrictive missile site located 55 steps under the Arizona desert.

There, the group visited the original control room where, during the Cold War period (1947-1991), the U.S. deterred the Soviet nuclear threat.

The Titan Missile System was the backbone of the “Peace Through Strength” policy, a strategy of war deterrence dating to the Roman Emperor Hadrian (who ruled during the years 117 to 138), according to a press release.

Once a launch signal was received, the Titan II missile and its nine-megaton thermonuclear device could deploy in 58 seconds, delivering its payload up to 6,000 miles away. The facility was operational until November 1982.

After lunch, the group stopped at the San Xavier del Bac Mission.

The next Trailblazers trip is to the Pima Air and Space Museum Wednesday, April 9. Members and guests are always welcome on Trailblazer road trips.
