Schweers voted Fountain Hills Democratic Club ‘Outstanding Democratic Volunteer’

Founding club member recognized

The Fountain Hills Democratic Club (FHDC) met on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Community Center where over 100 people attended an evening of presentations and one special award.

FHDC honored Ann Schweers, a Fountain Hills resident and club member, with the Outstanding Democratic Volunteer award.

Throughout her life, Schweers has donated many hours to community service. She and her husband volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and helped start a thrift store with proceeds given to those in need, FHDC Spokesperson Chris Clemens said. As one of the founding members of the FHDC, Schweers has participated in many local events including Make a Difference Day and the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“Ann is very worthy of this award,” Clemens said. “She is always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.”

The evening was also highlighted by a video presentation from Ruben Gallego, a potential Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Gallego’s experience in government includes serving in the AZ State Senate and is now a member of the U.S. House of Representatives where he has “proven to be very effective in passing bills to help working families,” Clemens added.

The club also heard from Laura Metcalfe, a potential candidate for Maricopa County Superintendent of School.

Metcalfe has 27 years of education experience and is passionate about supporting learning and achievement for all children in the public school system, Clemens said.

“She believes the current superintendent is not fulfilling his obligations and needs to be voted out,” Clemens added.

The FHDC also heard from Dr. Cain Jagodzinski, superintendent of the Fountain Hills Unified School District (FHUSD), Betsy LaVoie, president of the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce and Al Lorenz, chairman of “Yes for FH Students,” who all spoke in favor of the current school bond initiative.

The Fountain Hills Democratic Club meets every second Thursday of the month for informative meetings at the Community Center.
