Two tough losses for boys basketball

The Fountain Hills High School boys basketball team suffered two tough losses this past week, with one loss frustrating head coach Jeff Bonner more than the other.

Fountain Hills’ first game was on Jan. 29 against Gilbert Christian. FHHS lost the game 74-50.

The next game for the Falcons, which was also senior night, was on Jan. 31 and saw the home team face off against Coronado. FHHS lost the close game by a final score of 36-33.

The Falcons will finish the regular season this week with two more away games.

The first was Tuesday, Feb. 5, against Arizona College Prep and the second is Thursday, Feb. 7, against American Leadership Academy Gilbert starting a 7 p.m.

Judging based on nothing but the scores, you might be surprised by what loss irked head coach Jeff Bonner more.

“I was happier at the beginning of the week than I was at the end of the week with that,” Bonner said. “I was satisfied with our effort in the Gilbert Christian game. I tried to ramp us up going into the Coronado game and, even though that was closer, it was a tougher loss.”

Bonner believes that it was the two different attitudes his team went into each game with that was one of the biggest factors.

“As a coach, I was disheartened by the will and effort the guys gave in the Coronado game,” Bonner said. “It was never the will or effort to beat up on the team. It was just to compete, to do the minimum.”

Bonner said that when the team puts in the effort they can make plays happen, even against bigger teams.

“When we play bigger teams it seems like we are ready for a battle,” Bonner said about FHHS’ game with Gilbert Christian. “So when we played defense we did a good job of moving around, but also communicating with each other.”

Going into the last two games of the season, Bonner said he knows that his team is going to have to play more like they did against Gilbert Christian than they did Coronado.
