Tennis keeps battling

It was the last home match of the season for Fountain Hills tennis and, despite the leaps and bounds team members have made in terms of progress this season, the team still fell to its opponent while putting up a good fight.

Fountain Hills tennis only had one match this past week, a rematch against Arizona College Prep. The girls team lost its match 6-0 and the boys team lost 6-1.

Tennis had two road games this week. The first was on Monday, April 15, against Phoenix Country Day School. The second was the next day, Tuesday, April 16, against Scottsdale Prep.

For the girls tennis team, senior Rory Wilson, continues to be a standout.

“Rory has become an anchor for the team this year at the number one spot, with her consistent level of play and calm demeanor on the court,” head coach Ted Trippett said. “She is our only senior, and the team will definitely miss her next year.”

Wilson lost her match, 6-3 and 6-4. In the twos spot, Courtney Flynn fell to her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Elise Quan played in the threes spot and lost to her opponent 6-1, 6-0 and, in the fourth position, Penny Enterline fell behind her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

In the girls doubles competition, Wilson and Flynn were defeated 8-3 and Quan and Enterline lost 8-0.

On the boys’ side of the court Kyle Richardson battled in the ones spot but ultimately fell to his opponent by a final score of 6-3, 6-0. Andrei Urda lost in the twos spot 6-2, 6-0 and Casey Timms fell in the threes position 6-2, 6-1.

To close out the boys’ individual matches, newcomer Austin Berns lost in the fours spot 6-0, 6-0 and Blake Anderson won by forfeit.

The boys doubles team of Richardson and Urda lost 8-2 and Timms and Anderson lost 8-3.

Despite what the scoreboard indicated, Trippett said there is a lot left untold in the straight results.

“Our players are battling in rallies but still learning how to close out points and games, and this info doesn’t show up on the scoreboard,” Trippett said. “You can hang with a player for six shots or play four games at deuce, but if you lose the seventh shot or the deuce game nobody can tell from the score.”
