Swim team boasts strong performances

In the first swim meet ever in Fountain Hills High School history, every swimmer on the team did better than they expected.

On Aug. 30, the FHHS swim team competed against Seton Catholic and Chandler Prep.

The team’s next meet was on Sept. 6 against Tempe Prep. This week the aquatic Falcons will compete in the Horizon Tri Meet against Sandra Day O’Connor on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Head coach Patty Jenkins said she was thrilled with how Fountain Hills’ first meet went.

“This was a great quad meet to get the nervous energy out and get ready for our busy season ahead,” Jenkins said. “They performed against two very large teams, Chandler Prep and Seton Catholic. The team rose to the challenge, swimming against more seasoned swimmers. We have many personal records made and broken.”

Multiple Falcons placed in the top three spots of their events.

“Kennedy Muhs was first in the 50 freestyle and second by less than a second in the 500 freestyle,” Jenkins said. “She is a very well-rounded swimmer. Grace Clark was third in the 200 IM and second in the 100 freestyle while her sister, Annika Clark, took second in the 100 breaststroke. The relay team of Erin Morley, Grace and Annika Clark and Kennedy Muhs took second in the 400 medley relay.”

One highlight for Jenkins was that, if this meet had been a state qualifier meet, she would have had a handful of kids qualify.

“There were a few swimmers and a relay team that swam fast enough to make the provisional time to qualify for state [although the meet was not a qualifier],” Jenkins said. “That is great news for the team, knowing that this early in the season we are making times that could get us to the state meet.”

Jenkins says the team still needs to work on fundamentals as well as endurance, but school spirit is something they don’t need to work on.

“We by far have the best school spirit,” Jenkins said. “Our team was supportive of each swimmer and it was impressive against other very established programs. The swimmers are looking forward to some bonding time with team dinners coming up and many more meets.”

Jenkins did not provide results from the Sept. 6 meet in time for publication.
