Swim going strong

More and more seconds are getting shaved off of the aquatic Falcons’ personal records at each meet they compete in and this week was no exception for the high school swim team.

Fountain Hills competed in two swim meets this past week. The first was on Sept. 12 at Tempe Prep while the second meet was up north at Northern Arizona University on Sept. 14, where FHHS competed with 30 other schools. Team scores were unavailable as of press time.

Swim has one meet this week which is tomorrow, Sept. 19. The Falcons will travel to Horizon Honors to compete starting at 4 p.m.

Only a few meets into the season and the Falcons already have swimmers producing state qualifying times in their individual events.

Senior Connor Reiff finished the 50m freestyle in 22.56 and the 100m butterfly in 57.87, both state qualifying times.

Sophomore Grace Clark finished the 100m backstroke in 1:11.04 and the boys 200m freestyle relay with Reiff, Kyle Richardson, Gunnar Wise and Joseph Johnson put up a time of 1:46.80. Again, all would be state qualifying times.

Along with these times, seven girls and seven boys set new PRs in this week’s competitions with most of them “swimming four seconds faster than two weeks ago,” according to head coach Patti Schultz.

Schultz, overall, said she is happy with the steady progress her team is making.

“The swimmers are learning how to adjust and swim smart in the pool and we will continue to work on fast turns and starts,” Schultz said. “It is early in the season and we have more work to do in the pool, developing some endurance and continually improving the strokes. I am so excited for the athletes as they continue to step up and support each other.”
