The Fountain Hills High School girls basketball team started off 2019 with a bit of a lopsided run.
After an impressive showing at the Chandler Prep tournament over winter break, the Lady Falcons’ first opponent of the new year was Northwest Christian on Jan. 9. FHHS handily won the game 37-22.
The next day, Jan. 10, the Falcons took on Gilbert Christian Academy and went on to lose by a final score of 38-30.
On Jan. 12, Fountain Hills hosted Pusch Ridge Christian Academy for a weekend game. FHHS lost the game on a three-point buzzer beater, 43-42.
The Lady Falcons only have two games this week. The first was Tuesday, Jan. 15, against Coronado. Their next game is tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 17, where Fountain Hills will play host to Arizona College starting at 5:30 p.m.
One of the biggest hindrances the Lady Falcons faced during their first week back from break was inconsistent free throws.
Head coach Mandy Baca said she likes her team to average a 75 percent success rate when it comes to making free throws, but the Lady Falcons missed 27 free attempts in the past three games.
These missed points, while minor on their own, add up and could be the difference between a win and a loss, as was the case in the game against Pusch Ridge.
Further comments from coach Baca were not available as of press time.
