Golf team wraps regular season, heads to state

After a successful final week consisting of one last meet and a final invitational before the state tournament, head coach Jody Wilson said he is feeling confident that members of his Falcon golf squad are playing the best they have all season.

On April 30, Fountain Hills played in its last meet against Rancho Solano Prep and Phoenix Country Day. The Falcons went on to win the meet.

On May 3 and 4, Fountain Hills joined 18 other schools and took part in the Metro Invitational. After overcoming a challenging first day the Falcons placed fifth overall in the invitational.

The state tournament began Tuesday, May 7, and continues Wednesday, May 8. The tournament is being held in Tucson and begins at 10 a.m.

Wilson said he was happy to see his team win its last meet but he thinks their time at the Metro Invitational will help them more in the state tournament.

“The Metro Invitational is the largest one in the 3A Division, so it is much closer to what the environment at state is going to be like,” Wilson said. “Also, the first [day] was really tough for golf. It was hot and the game was moving slow, so it can be more difficult to keep yourself focused.”

Despite it being a challenging day, there were still some bright spots for the Falcons.

Ben Danko, coming off a hole in one from the previous week, shot two eagles on the first day of the Metro event.

Danko finished the tournament in 13th place with the closest Falcon behind him being Alex Schafer at the 17th spot.

Going into the state tournament, Wilson believes that the most important factor in how his athletes will perform is how they conduct themselves during the long days of play.

“The only thing that I expect of my guys is that, when they are on the course, they have honor, integrity and respect,” Wilson explained. “They have to be in control of themselves because some holes are going to go really good and then some aren’t. So you need to choose to not let the bad hole ruin everything and bounce back.”
