Girls soccer falls to Anthem

Fountain Hills High School Girls soccer faced the only other undefeated team in the Metro North Region this past week.

On Jan. 24 the Lady Falcons played against Anthem Prep and lost the match 3-1.

FHHS only had one more game this regular season yesterday, Jan. 29, against Horizon Honors.

Things got off to a quick start in the match against Anthem when Lady Falcons Ashby Owen netted a misplayed ball from the Anthem goalkeeper in the first three minutes.

Despite that early goal, FHHS still struggled to find their groove.

“The teams spent a good portion of the first half trying to find their rhythm and played even,” head coach Matt Wiehl said. “Until Anthem Prep took advantage of the Falcon defense, who was unable to clear a ball which eventually was headed into the goal to tie the match at 1-1.”

Fountain Hills battled hard throughout the second half but an Anthem Prep forward was able to score off a cross ball.

“The third and game clinching goal for Anthem Prep came with only minutes remaining when the Falcons pushed defenders into the attack to desperately try for a tying goal.”
