The Fountain Hills High School wrestling team finished its regular season with one final invitational tournament.

On Jan. 25 and Jan. 26 the grappling Falcons traveled to Heber, along with 22 other teams from Division 3 and 4 schools, for the 30th annual Mogollon Invitational.

Fountain Hills will be traveling back to Heber Saturday, Feb. 2, for the sectionals tournament where Falcons can qualify for the state tournament.

Head Coach Luke Salzman was happy to report that his team of younger wrestlers is starting to find their footing in the sport.

“Freshman Hector Leon did especially well in the 220 pound weight class as he was one point away from placing in this 22 team tournament,” Salzman said. “He has really come along and is learning how to use his strength and weight at his advantage. He will continue to improve and will be fun to watch in the next couple years.”

Meanwhile, the lone senior on the team, Leyton Kaufman, placed second in the tournament.

“He picked up a great overtime win in the semi-finals beating Thatcher's Brik Skousen (43-2),” Salzman said. “Kauffman came up short to Michael Densmore from Winslow in the finals.”

With the regular season wrapped up Salzman wants his wrestlers to be focused on the sectionals tournament this Saturday, where a wrestler can qualify for state no matter their regular season record.

“I've told the boys all year, their goal is to qualify for the state tournament,” Salzman said. “Wrestle well on Saturday and anything can happen.”
