Boys basketball enters playoffs

Posted

The regular season ended on a high note for the Fountain Hills High School boys basketball team with the squad netting two wins in the last week of regular play.

The Falcons’ first game last week was on Feb. 5 against Arizona College Prep. FHHS won the game 69-56.

The second game for Fountain Hills was on Feb. 7 against the American Leadership Academy Gilbert. The Falcons pulled off a 68-64 victory in that game.

The first playoff game for boys basketball is today, Feb. 13, at Florence. The game will start at 6:30 p.m.

If the Falcons win today they will advance to the next round to play Sabino on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m. A location for that game has not yet been provided.

AZ College Prep

Being on the road for the last two games of the season, the Falcons got to witness their opponents’ senior night celebrations, which dragged the start of the game out but didn’t affect how the local boys played.

“The guys came out ready and came out energized,” head coach Jeff Bonner said. “I was really impressed with how they handled that game.”

Bonner said he was impressed with how some of the younger players ran the systems he had in place.

“Some of the younger guys stepped up and were just a catalyst to what we can do,” Bonner said. “They also made themselves easy to find for other players. Instead of having to make tough moves to find an open pass they were cutting into open areas and the passes happened naturally. It was a very fun game.”

ALA Gilbert

Fountain Hills’ last game of the season got off to a rocky start.

“I would say that they (ALA) came out and smacked us in the mouth,” Bonner joked. “But I was impressed because we didn’t back down. We stuck to our guns and made subs that got things done.”

For Bonner, who has been trying to get the team to buy more into the process he has put in place, the game was a good reaffirmation of why the team should stick to the game plan.

“It was sticking with process,” Bonner said. “Your best case scenario, a team doesn’t come out and smack you in the mouth. But if that happens we can’t quit and we can’t do what we want to do because that is not what we practiced. A lot of the guys stuck with what we practiced and I think that had a lot to do with how and why we came back in the game.”
