The Fountain Hills Sanitary District estimates that “1 million pounds of sodium [are] added to wastewater from the salt added to water softeners. [It] ends up on parks and golf courses, damaging their turf. Before you add your next bag of salt to your water softener, consider using a safer salt alternative.”
The District specifically notes that the added annual cost of a safe alternative purchased at Costco is less than $50. Quite a bargain when measured in terms of the results.
