Noisy library

Posted

Noise at the library; is it just me or what? In all of my years of going to a library – and I have been in quite a few in my 70 plus years – the local library here in Fountains Hills is the noisiest, most disruptive library I have ever used.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I can appreciate programs that encourage young children to learn and be entertained. I was while I was growing up and the children of today deserve to be, also. However, it should not be done in a library atmosphere that disrupts the rest of the citizens using the library.

When I inquired about the noise, the staff informed me that it was a “community program,” so the disruption was allowed. Then why are patrons not allowed to turn on the audio at the computers? Noise is noise, so what is the difference?

If we are going to have “community program,” I would recommend they be held in the “Community Center” across from the library. There are plenty of rooms available for these programs to exist. In the past, when inquiring with the librarian, I was told to move to a quieter area of the library. That is impossible to do when drums are being banged along with a piano playing.

This is from a list of standards for libraries, Article 3: Basic Rights and Duties of Library Users. The library user is obliged to: follow the library manual and other internal regulations as well as instructions of the library employees, submit to inspection, which is crucial for maintaining order and protection of the library property, keep silence in all library premises, keep them clean.
