Development

Posted

A month ago I wrote about the pending planned development at the corner of Shea Blvd. and Palisades Blvd. After the development was announced there have been some letters to the editor and most of the town council has received phone calls and emails from Fountain Hills residents expressing their opinion on the matter.

For those not yet familiar with this project, the current plans call for 18 buildings consisting of 400 apartments; in comparison to Park Place, which has two buildings and 220 apartments.

To accomplish their development, the developers have requested a number of waivers from existing town ordinances regarding height of buildings, length of buildings, signage, parking and removing the existing hillside and filling in the washes with that hillside material. This will forever change the nature of the western entrance to Fountain Hills, not to mention the added vehicular traffic to the existing roadways.

In the Fountain Hills 2010 General Plan, the document states on page 44, “the Growth Areas Element focuses on opportunities for integrating new developments seamlessly.” A 400-unit apartment complex in the middle of single-family dwelling neighborhoods, seamlessly, I think not.

I urge Fountain Hills residents to become familiar with this proposal and contact the mayor, town council members and zoning commission with your opinion on the matter.
