Alchemy

Alchemy, turning iron into gold. I was struck by prevalence of this concept present in last week’s letters to the editor. We can raise $1,000,000 just by jacking up fair fees. We can save loads of bucks recruiting me and my “senior citizen” friends to patrol the streets. And lastly, we can turn our town staff into revenue generators.

All these suggestions are the result of voodoo math. Fifty dollars a linear foot would increase the average booth cost by $750. Say goodbye to the fairs.

A citizen patrol sounds like a good idea for a sitcom, but have you checked the age demographics for the town lately? Say goodbye to the town’s liability insurance.

Equating number of town employees to revenue generation is wrong on so many levels it’s mindboggling.

No one wants to pay taxes. Most of us came from places with much higher tax rates. I am perpetually amazed by how much gets done with so little, compared to my previous locales.

Constantly casting aspersions on our elected officials and town staff is more than unfair, it is cruel.

You don’t need to justify your desire to not pay taxes.
