John Charles Phillips

Posted

John Charles Phillips passed away on Nov. 25, 2018 at 88 years of age. He was born in southeastern Ohio on Dec. 9, 1929 to Roy and Clara Phillips.

Growing up in a largely agricultural area of Ohio, he was the first of his family of three brothers to go to college, much to the resistance of his farming father. He went to The Ohio State University in 1949 to study animal husbandry and ultimately graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.

After graduation he married Margaret JoAnne Johnston, also of southeastern, Ohio. He became a Herdsman for Hereford cattle, which led to a position with Ralston Purina as part of their management trainee program to run a feed mill in Norfolk, Neb. More job opportunities on the horizon steered John and his family to Missouri and Pennsylvania.

One of his interests was real estate and through his life he invested in real estate, including a historic conversion of a cigar factory in Sellersville, Pa. that is on the National Register of Historic Places.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (JoAnne) Phillips; son, Mark V. (Kathy) Phillips; and daughter, Lisa V. (Bill) MacNamara and predeceased son, Matthew J. Phillips; and survived by grandchildren, Katelin (Eric) Barrett, Elizabeth MacNamara, Daniel Phillips and Charles MacNamara.

John was in the Army reserves for many years. He was a member of St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church in Scottsdale, involved in Meals on Wheels as well as the local Parkinson’s chapter in Fountain Hills.

His real passion was his love for his alma mater “The Ohio State University.” He bled scarlet and gray and would never miss an OSU game. He had the blessing to attending many games including the Michigan-Ohio State Snow Bowl of 1950, the Rose Bowl of 1950 and many other of his beloved teams’ games. A fitting end was his watching OSU crush Michigan 62 to 39 on November 24. Go Bucks!

A celebration of John’s life will be held at St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church 12990 E. Shea Blvd. Scottsdale, AZ 85259 on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to parkinson.org/
