Before confronting a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Sergeant the evening of Monday, Jan. 7, Ismail Hamed told the MCSO dispatcher that he “had allegiance” to the Islamic state and was eager to talk to a deputy about his concerns for “suffering” people.

On Thursday the Sheriff’s Office released audio tapes for two 911 calls Hamed made before the confrontation and the video from the deputy’s body camera. Initially sealed by a judge, the documents were ordered released after a legal challenge by Valley media outlets.

Sheriff Paul Penzone and the Phoenix FBI office are still refusing to talk about details of the investigation.

According to a Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Hamed been released from the hospital after treatment for his wounds and is in custody.

Hamed was initially charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Since that time, charges of terrorism have been added and the FBI has been involved in the investigation since the beginning.
