Deputy-involved shooting in Fountain Hills Monday afternoon

Posted

Update - - Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that on Monday, Jan. 7, a man was repeatedly calling 911 asking to talk to an MCSO deputy at the MCSO Fountain Hills Substation located at 16705 E. Ave. of the Fountains.

At approximately 5:35 p.m. an MCSO Sergeant went outside to the substation parking lot where he made contact with the subject, identified only as an 18-year old male from Fountain Hills. The subject began throwing rocks at Sergeant, according to the MCSO statement.

The suspect then allegedly brandished a knife and advanced towards the Sergeant despite repeated commands by the deputy for him to drop the weapon. The Sergeant discharged his service weapon which incapacitated the suspect.

First aid was rendered on scene and the suspect was transported to the hospital. As of about 11 a.m. Tuesday the suspect is expected to survive his injuries.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and more details will be released as they become available.

Original report -- Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported deputy-involved shooting just outside the District Substation at Fountain Hills Town Hall late Monday afternoon.

A radio call broadcast by a local television station indicated the suspect was throwing rocks at a deputy and the deputy had drawn his weapon.

MCSO did report that no deputies were injured in the incident. The suspect was transported to the hospital, but there has been no report on their condition.

Jay Schlum, former Fountain Hills mayor, was in his office across the Avenue of the Fountains from the Sheriff’s substation parking lot when he said he heard two quick, low compression sounds.

Schlum said he did not really see anything out the window on the second floor because of a tree. He went down to the street when it appeared a lot of people were watching what was going on.

“There were two deputies standing there working to restrain a [person] in dark clothing lying on the ground,” Schlum said. “I could hear moaning, but the [person] seemed to be resisting.”

Schlum then said other deputies began to arrive on the scene from inside the building and returning from patrol. Fort McDowell Police and Fountain Hills Fire Department also arrived on the scene.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. and MCSO did not talk with media at the scene of the incident prior to 10 p.m. television news broadcasts on Monday evening.
