Council wants ideas for Avenue name

Posted

With a new look coming to the Avenue of the Fountains soon, the Town Council has decided it might be time to stop using the “median” moniker to describe what will soon be a park down the center of the street.

They want the public to participate in choosing a new name.

“A lot of work is going into this project and we need a formal name that recognizes that,” Councilman Henry Leger said. “I’d like to see this done so this council can make the decision.”

Two new council members will be sworn in the first session in December leaving the time short.

Councilman Dennis Brown made the suggestion that it is a central area and thought “Avenue Central” would be appropriate.

Mayor Linda Kavanagh made note there are a lot of new fountains that will lead to Fountain Park and “Avenue of the Fountains” still rings true.

“The area is being called ‘Town Center’ for planning purposes,” Vice Mayor Cecil Yates said. “The branding needs to be consistent with tourism proposals.”

Kavanagh noted that the council had heard from Community Services staff Rachael Goodwin and Grace Rodman-Guetter earlier in the council meeting regarding their tourism efforts.

Kavanagh suggested the ideas should also come from the public as well as staff and the council.

In a follow-up email to The Times clarifying the plan, Kavanagh said, “If residents have suggestions those would go to Rachel and Grace who would then pick a few for council consideration at the first meeting in November.

“I think it is also left open for Rachel and Grace, with their expertise in marketing, to also contribute their ideas for naming. So in the end the suggestions chosen should be what (Goodwin and Rodman-Guetter) decide are best, no matter who they came from, council included.”

Goodwin said there would be an online survey option that was to be live at the end of the day Monday. She said they would also be accepting names via email, at Town Hall or at the Community Center.
