January is the highest month for blood usage.

People often put off non-emergency surgeries until after the holidays. The blood supply is low this time of year. As of Jan. 3, the stock of 0-negative blood, the universal blood type used in emergencies had dwindled to less than a one-day supply.

The Noon Kiwanis and The Town of Fountain Hills are doing their part in helping collect more blood. The January Blood Drive is set for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25 and 26.

To make an appointment for either day, call Paul Appeldorn, 480-836-8213 or email him at appeldop@hotmail.com; or call Dr. Liz Smith, 480-837-2600 (w), 480-837-8110 (h) or 480-206-4785 (c) or email her at no1drliz@gmail.com.

Appointments also may be made by visiting Vitalant’s website, unitedbloodservices.org/AZ. Choose “Kiwanis” as the code.

Appointments may be made for the hours between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. both days. Blood donations take about an hour total.
