Local game inventor wins prestigious award

On the heels of the release of a new card game, Zangle, by SET Enterprises, inventor Marsha J. Falco has won the “Best of Toy Fair 2019” award at the International Toy Fair in New York City.

More than 26,000 industry professionals attended the conference Feb. 16-19 to learn what’s new in toy trends.

Zangle involves combining two or more cards to make a shape on another card. Players can twist or flip a card to make the shape. The goal is to use all your cards to make a Zangle and be the first player to go out.

The card game can be played with one to six individuals from the age of six or older.

Falco’s games are sold to retailers across the U.S. and in 40 different countries through a family business. She founded SET Enterprises, which is now operated by her daughter, Colette.

The office address of SET Enterprises, Inc. is 16537 E. Laser Drive, suite 10.

Falco received a master’s of science degree in population genetics from Michigan State University and a bachelor of science degree in animal science from Arizona State University.

She invented her first game, SET, in 1974 while involved in genetic research in Cambridge, England.

The idea for SET came when she was trying to understand whether epilepsy in German Shepherds was inherited. To track the individual traits of the dogs, she created file cards with blocks of information for each dog.

Because certain blocks of information were the same for many dogs, she drew symbols to represent the information rather than writing out the data each time.

Different symbols with different properties represented different traits. While explaining the mathematical properties behind the combinations on the file cards to the veterinarians, Falco saw the fun in finding the different combinations and SET was born.

Over the years, she refined the game by playing with her family and friends and it was released in 1990.

Falco continued to develop games, each spanning various styles of gameplay. Her creations include Give Crowns, Quiddler, Xactika, Karma and WordSpiel.

She expanded on some of her fans’ favorite games by creating SET Dice, Quiddler Deluxe, SET Junior, Quiddler Junior, Five Crowns Junior and The Quiddler SHORT Word Dictionary.

Her love for travel inspired Mini Rounds, which are shorter, faster versions of SET, Five Crowns, Quiddler and Karma. Mini Rounds come in 2-inch tins and are perfect for on-the-go travel.

To date, more than 10 million of Falco’s games have been sold. Although now retired, she still creates games.

The suggested manufacture’s price for Zangle is $12.99. Zangle can be purchased locally at Cards of Fountain Hills, 12645 N. Saguaro Blvd., suite 6, and Fallen Phoenix Games, 12035 N. Saguaro Blvd., suite 105.
