Chiropractor treats patients, not symptoms

Over the past 25 years, Dr. Lisa Montez-Wood has treated many patients for ailments triggered by poor nutrition and unhealthy lifestyles.

Now, in the 25th year of her business, Palisades Family Chiropractic, she is focusing on wellness and prevention.

Montez-Wood has not deserted chiropractic services as the mainstay of her practice. She attained a functional medicine certificate to provide holistic care to her patients.

Functional medicine is a holistic medicine discipline that not only takes into account the lifestyle habits of a patient, but also getting to the root cause.

“My whole practice is not so much typically chiropractic,” said Montez-Wood. “I really try to focus on prevention and wellness.”

After addressing the initial reason for a patient to see her and the individual is feeling better, she’s checking and reinforcing good motion and muscle balance so that they continue doing well and “not on the verge of having a problem again.”

“It is my feeling that each patient should be viewed as a person – as a whole being – not just a bunch of parts of a list of symptoms,” she expressed on her website, happyspines.com. “With this approach, the goal of finding the real cause of the problem can be more easily attained.”

She said she can then focus on treatment without the use of drugs, which often mask the symptoms and underlying causes.

She still focuses on chiropractic care for babies and young children. One of the major health issues that she addresses is nursing difficulties.

“We do have control of our health,” is a message that she emphasizes with patients.

“Most of the chronic conditions are lifestyle and nutrition choices,” Montez-Wood said. “I don’t think those are being addressed.”

In observance of the silver anniversary, from July 15-19, new patients will pay $25 for an initial consultation and examination and $25 for treatments and adjustments, which are normally $50. Supplements are discounted 25 percent on her website.

She will repeat the anniversary offers in the fall when many patients return.

Montez-Wood’s office in the Palisades Business Center, 16930 E. Palisades Blvd., suite 104, is open three mornings and three afternoons a week. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and 3 to 5:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
