Theater: Making lemonade out of lemons

Fountain Hills Theater is slowly making progress on renovations necessitated by a broken water pipe last March.

The flooding affected the lobby, hallway, executive office, youth theater storage and the dressing room. Repairs and restorations are ongoing.

The board of directors and staff recently decided that while the restoration project is underway, it was logical to update other parts of the theater.

A “GoFundMe” account has been set up to raise $15,000 to augment funds covered by insurance.

Insurance is covering basic replacement, but updating the theater has been a goal for some time.

“We would like to take this opportunity to improve the interior appearance and efficiency of the space,” said Board President Sandi McGee shortly after the flood.

A water pipe burst between a water heater and potable water expansion tank at the theater sometime early on March 31. Except for one performance, all shows were held. While work has been underway all summer, shows and summer camp have continued uninterrupted.

The plans for the additional work include a new interior design theme, updated concessions and will call window, a new box office and staff offices and a more functional youth theater dressing area, new lighting, storage and prep areas.

A number of businesses have donated time and resources toward the renovations including Shea Connelly Development, Camelot Homes, Affinity Kitchens/Debbie Vinopal and Martha Andrighetti Designs.

At press time, the GoFundMe page showed $4,107 had been raised. To donate to the theater, go to gofundme.com/f/fountain-hills-theater-makeover-2019.
