Show tunes, opera, pop at special Summer Beckman shows

First you graduate from high school, then you start getting ready for college but then you decide to produce a musical.

Summer Beckman, who has been involved in Fountain Hills Theater since she was eight, starts Arizona State University as a freshman next month. She is a 2019 graduate of Desert Mountain High School and works at Streets of New York as a waitress.

Meanwhile, she is preparing a musical at Fountain Hills Theater. She will sing a variety of music, including classical, pop and musical theater tunes. She will perform all except one or two songs, and she will be accompanied by a number of special guests.

The show, “Summer Beckman: Live in Concert” is set for Sunday, July 28, and Monday, July 29, at Fountain Hills Theater. Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for students. They are available online at fhtaz.org.

Beckman will be joined by Kale Burr and Grace Napoletano on Sunday. Special guests Monday are Alex Gonzaelz and Erin Schumacher. Reigh Tuazon, lead vocalist with J.J.’s Band, will join her on stage for some of their most requested duets.

The show was Beckman’s mother, Paige Beckman’s idea. Summer said her mother encouraged her to do the show when she decided not to study theater in college.

“I guess this will be kind of a send-off for me,” Summer said. “It’s a way to say thank you to Fountain Hills for all the great experiences.”

Instead of following a theater path, which Summer said is “very competitive, sometimes hard to get parts and you might not have a steady job,” she will major in computer science.

“It’s pretty different from theater, but I have always been interested in math and science and technology,” the 18-year-old said. “It will be a good career.”

She added that she will continue with her “hobby” in theater, possibly performing at ASU, as well as at Fountain Hills or other venues.

She has performed exclusively at Fountain Hills Theater and Desert Mountain High School, where most recently she played “Roxie” in the school’s production of “Chicago.”

She also has had the lead in “The Little Mermaid” and “Annie” at Fountain Hills Youth Theater.

Summer said she has “great support” from her family and friends.

Streets of New York is offering 20 percent off meals when customers show their tickets to Summer’s show. The offer is valid only at the Fountain Hills store, 16841 E. Shea Blvd.

“My dad is doing one song with me in the show,” she said. “He is a really good guitarist.”

Paige Beckman also works with the theater, coordinating summer camps and other activities.

Summer has a younger brother and sister. Her brother attends Fountain Hills High School and is in the band. Her sister sings and plays the piano, as well as performing at the theater.

Following her concert, Summer will begin her next step: moving to ASU to live in the dorm.

“Everything is moving really fast right now,” she said. “But I am so excited for it all.”
