Trio Cernotta-Dorsey-Piva is the featured concert at Arts at Ascension Friday, Jan. 11.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension. Tickets may be securely purchased online at artsatascension.org and will be available at the door. Priority seating is $30 per person and general admission tickets are $25. Season tickets for the concert series also are available. A reception follows the performance.
Guitarists Miguel Piva and Chris Dorsey have performed together for years with the Santa Fe (Argentina) Guitar Quartet. They are joined by bandoneonist Danilo Cernotto. The bandoneon is a type of concertina particularly popular in Argentina and Uruguay. It is an essential instrument in most tango ensembles from the traditional orquesta típica of the 1910s and beyond.
The trio will feature the electric tangos of Astor Piazzolla. Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer who is credited for revolutionizing the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. They will also play works by contemporary composer Celso Machado (Brazil) and Ralph Towner (U.S.).
Ticket sales benefit the fine arts program at St. Matthew’s School, an inner-city Catholic school in downtown Phoenix. Since 2014, Arts at Ascension has raised more than $60,000 to support the arts program.
