Last updated at 4:21 p.m. on February 22 Fire damages Briarwood home Fountain Hills firefighters responded to a residential clothes dryer fire in the 14000 block of Briarwood Drive on Tuesday afternoon. Assistant Fire Chief Randy Roberts said Sheriff’s deputies arrived ahead of firefighters and controlled the blaze using a fire extinguisher. Roberts said damage was confined to the dryer and a closet where it was located. He estimated damage to be about $5,000. Council begins budget discussion The Town Council began sorting through the pieces of the proposed 2012/2013 fiscal year budget at a study session on Tuesday evening. There was relatively good news going into the preliminary discussions. Interim Town Manager/Finance Director Julie Ghetti said a projected $411,000 shortfall going into the budget process has all but been erased. She also said revenues are expected to be on the rise also. The council discussion focused on stated goals for the fiscal year with discussions related to public safety, economic development and tourism. McDowell Park this week The weather looks great to be taking in activities at McDowell Mountain Park this spring. Items scheduled for the next couple of days include: Little Critters Storytime with Ranger Amy, Thursday, Feb. 23, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. (geared toward preschoolers and up). Themed program set around a children’s book read aloud by Ranger Amy. Activities vary and may include live animals, songs, crafts and/or puppet plays. Visitor Center. The Desert Grocery Store, Thursday, Feb. 23, 10-11:30 a.m.. Meet at the North Trail Trailhead for a 1 ½ mile interpretive hike learning about what people used to eat before grocery stores came to the Valley. Friday Fitness Hikes, all starting at 8 a.m. Hike lengths vary. Feb. 24, meet at the Trailhead Staging Area for the 4.8-mile hike on the Scenic Trail. El Dorado Animal Hospital open house Local pet artists will join the staff of El Dorado Animal Hospital, 16765 Parkview Ave., from noon to 3 p.m., Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, during an open house. Food and drink will be provided. Dr. Sarah Bashaw will discuss her philosophy of veterinary medicine and pet care. McDowell Mountain holds registration McDowell Mountain Elementary School and the McDowell Mountain Preschool are gearing up for the 2012-13 academic year with registration for both kindergarten and preschool programs. Registration will be held Feb. 23 from 9 to 11 a.m., 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Registration continues Feb. 24 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. A birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residency will be needed upon registration. Senor Taco Day funds local schools McDowell Mountain Elementary School will celebrate Senor Taco Day Friday, Feb. 24. Ten percent of all sales that day will go to benefit McDowell Mountain programs, so the school is inviting everyone out to the local Senor Taco to grab a bite and support local education.
