Drivers needed

Give a Lift….help a life.

The town’s volunteer transportation program, Give a Lift, needs more volunteer drivers.

This program is a volunteer-based initiative that matches the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged with volunteer drivers who provide their own energy, vehicle and time to assist their fellow residents in getting to medical appointments, the grocery store, the pharmacy and other destinations.

The Give a Lift Program started in the summer of 2009, when Maricopa County ended its Special Transportation Services due to economic cutbacks. Initially there were 43 volunteers, offering about three to four rides monthly.

Volunteers have the flexibility to provide a ride or not depending upon their schedule.

The rides are more than transportation to the riders, many of whom have become friends with their drivers. The rides provide the opportunity for better healthcare, continued independent living, a social connection to the community, and a sense of dignity.

The program’s needs are growing faster than the current number of drivers can keep up with.

Many medical offices refer patients to the program, as does the Activity Center for Seniors & Boomers, various group homes and skilled nursing facilities and Valley Metro.

Word of mouth has also played a big role in the growth of the program as riders are so grateful to the drivers.

Please consider becoming a Give a Lift Driver…you can provide one ride monthly or more, it’s always your decision.  Meanwhile, the current riders want to thank each of the drivers who have helped improve the quality of their lives.
