It may be far, far short of the national campaign for president, but the two candidates for mayor of Fountain Hills have raised nearly $24,000 between them for their election campaigns.
Jerry Miles has collected $15,699 from donors, while Councilman Jay Schlum has received $8,167 in contributions.
As of Feb. 20, Miles had spent $14,716 to get elected to Schlum’s $5,298 in expenses.
As far as contributors go, Miles has received $3,100, or about 20 percent of his total, in donations from the principals involved in MCO Properties, and parent company MAXXAM, of Houston, Texas.
MCO President Jeremy Hall, who runs and Fountain Hills office, and his wife, each contributed $390 to the Miles campaign.
From the MAXXAM offices in Houston, Charles Hurwitz, Shawn Hurwitz and company executive J. Kent Friedman, and each of their wives, also gave Miles $390 each.
Miles also received a $390 contribution from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Miles received $50 from former Mayor Sharon Morgan, who defeated him for the job of mayor in 1998.
Schlum received $690 total from Councilman Mike Archambault and his wife. He also has a $90 contribution from Vice Mayor Ginny Dickey.
Dennis Brown, who is chairman of the town Planning and Zoning Commission gave Schlum a $350 contribution, which was also matched by Brown’s wife.
Sheila Nichols, wife of Mayor Wally Nichols, gave Schlum $200. There is no listed donation from Mayor Nichols.
Schlum also received a $350 contribution from his mother, Dawn.
Council candidates generally have received less money from donors leaving them less to spend.
Lina Bellenir has raised $775 in contributions, and has spent $792, according to the financial paperwork she filed.
Bellenir’s largest single contribution is $300 received from Bob Scarpetti and Barbara Handmacher of Fountain Hills.
Dennis Contino raised $412 and spent all but $2.77.
Contino’s largest contributor is William Purdy, Jr. of Fountain Hills, with a $200 donation.
Cassie Hansen raised $2,245 in campaign contributions. Her largest donor is Yvonne Vargo, who gave her $300.
Hansen also has a $225 loan from herself for the campaign. Hansen had spent nothing as of the end of the reporting period.
Kathie Kelly has been able to raise $3,330 for her campaign, with much of that coming from separate donations from family members.
Kelly also received $100 from Archambault and $70 from Dickey.
Kelly has spent $2,499.
Councilman Keith McMahan has raised $2,285 in campaign contributions, and he has spent $2,000.
McMahan received $300 from MAXXAM of Houston, Texas. He is a former employee of MCO Properties.
McMahan also received $250 from Hazel Klein of Fountain Hills
Tyler campaign committee raised $2,460 and has spent $2,127.
The received $390 from Archambault and also $100 from Morgan.
Tyler also received a $390 donation from Alan Ahearn of Scottsdale and a Fountain Hills business owner.
Candidates also have a post-primary election report due on March 31.
