I remember back in the early ‘90s when the Town Council wanted a small sales tax. They promised if they got the new sales tax it would always be the lowest in the state. Now our sales tax is one of the highest in the state.
Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano vetoed a bill that would have permanently suspended state property tax. That is right, there is going to be a state property tax showing up on your doorstep next year.
The school override tax has not been added to the tax bill yet. But you will also see that increase in the coming months.
Maybe these are the reasons the Town Council was in a hurry to get the town property tax on the May ballot. They know that the citizens of Fountain Hills would never vote for a new property tax after they receive the new tax bills.
It just does not make sense to ask for another new tax if the town doesn’t need the monies for at least 10 years. If the town would start tightening their belts now, maybe they would not need a property tax for 20 years.
I have heard with all the new taxes coming on board and the economy in poor shape that many of the retired citizens who are on fixed incomes may have to move out of Fountain Hills.
I ask you to please vote no on the property tax. I also ask you to please vote for Dennis Contino. He strongly opposed the property tax.
