PTO celebrates another big year

Posted

The local PTO has completed another year filled with fundraising efforts made successful due to the support of volunteers.

“We’ve had one of our best years ever with a record-breaking book fair and highly attended events such as Dudes and Donuts and Books N Bagels,” said PTO President Lisa Mulkey.

“In addition, we had our second PTO boutique with over 30 local businesses participating. Perhaps the most exciting fundraiser this year was our Apex Fun Run that involved most of the McDowell Mountain and Four Peaks students, parents and teachers. Over $50,000 was raised through these efforts.”

Despite all of this, Mulkey said one of her greatest joys was the PTO’s ability to give each FHUSD teacher $200 for classroom supplies. This amounts to $22,000 and is one of the most impactful expenditures the PTO makes, according to Mulkey.

The PTO would like to thank outgoing board members Dianne Stricker, Marlyn Gibbons and Marcie Belt for their dedicated years of service.

“The PTO has been the gold standard in our community the past ten years and I'm enthused to keep that reputation intact,” said Mulkey.

“We have had incredibly dedicated board members and will miss the three who are departing. On the other hand, I am very excited for our new board for their enthusiasm and fresh ideas. Our district is undergoing many changes and it's always very rewarding working with the administrators and teachers.”

Mayor Linda Kavanagh said she’s looking forward to seeing the PTO continue to grow.

“The PTO has worked very hard all these years in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and town government,” Kavanagh said.

“It’s been an incredible experience to observe and participate with such an inspired group.”

The PTO’s primary goal is to ensure that local children's education is of the highest standard by fostering a strong partnership between the schools and community. It is achieved by coordinating volunteers, hosting family events, sponsoring fundraisers, promoting community groups, and by listening and advocating for our teachers, parents and students.

“It’s been so rewarding watching the PTO develop and exponentially grow the past decade,” said McDowell Mountain Principal Joanne Meehan.

“They have been an integral part of all of our activities at our 600-student school.”
