On Thursday, Oct. 5, the day following C.T. Wright’s 81st birthday anniversary, U.S. Congressman David Schweikert (AZ-1) participated in a dedication ceremony for the naming of the Fountain Hills Post Office in honor of Dr. C.T. Wright and his life and legacy.
Wright was known as a passionate educator, bringing his expertise to many of the country’s historically black colleges, according to a release on the ceremony. In the years following his time teaching, Wright shifted his focus more broadly to help with human rights, founding the Light of Hope Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit ministry that provides prevention education to individuals and families facing the struggle of substance misuse.
As a 21-year resident of Arizona, Wright was an icon in Fountain Hills, serving in several capacities including member of the Fountain Hills Unified School District governing board, president of the Fountain Hills Kiwanis Club and president of the Arizona African Society.
Wright was also president of the Fountain Hills Republican Club for two years. Under his leadership, the club was awarded the Best Republican Club or Organization in the state by the AZ GOP Chair.
Wright was recognized by past Governor Jan Brewer and the AZ GOP Chair with many awards, including the highest award given by the AZ GOP, the Barry Goldwater Award .
Wright was was appointed by the governor to serve on the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency, where he served as chairman.
Schweikert introduced legislation Oct. 20, 2021, designating the Fountain Hills Post Office as the Dr. C.T. Wright Post Office Building in honor of his distinguished achievements and contributions to countless Arizona communities. After unanimously passing both the Senate and House of Representatives, this legislation was signed into law (Public Law No: 117-279) Dec. 27, 2022, which culminated in the ceremonial event on Thursday, Oct. 5.
“Fountain Hills is a better community, we are better people because Dr. Wright and his wife, Mary, chose to spend a part of their life here,” Schweikert said in his remarks.
