The Fountain Hills Democratic Club (FHDC) meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Fountain Hills Community Center with presentations from Linda Somo, Jodi Liggett and Julie Gunnigle.

Somo is the current president of the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans which advocates for senior issues, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

Somo retired from the Mesa Unified District after 30 years of teaching English and counseling for junior high and high school students in both Arizona and Ohio. In 1999, Somo was chosen as Arizona Secondary Counselor of the Year.

Julie Gunnigle calls herself “a local loudmouth attorney and activist who fights for justice in our criminal legal system, funding for public schools, and other important social issues,” according to FHDC spokesperson, Chris Clemens.

Gunnigle is a former prosecutor of financial crime and public corruption for the Cook County, Ill.,  State’s Attorney Office. She is also the co-founder of Full Spectrum Law Collective, a legal practice that focuses on impact litigation concerning the criminalization of pregnancy and the war on drugs, Clemens said.

“She remains committed to the transformation of our criminal legal system and holding those who abuse power accountable,” Clemens added.

Jodi Liggett is an Arizona native, women’s advocate and public policy expert who has worked in both Republican and Democratic administrations. Liggett has worked in the nonprofit and private sectors according to Clemens.

Liggett’s career highlights include being on staff for the Welfare Reform Arizona House Committee, policy advisor to former state Governor Jane Hull, CEO of the Arizona Foundation for Women, senior policy advisor to former Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and deputy chief of staff for current Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. Liggett holds a law degree and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arizona State University.

The FHDC meeting begins with socializing and snacks at 6 p.m. followed by speaker presentations at 6:30 p.m.

The Community Center is located at 13001 N. La Montana Dr.
