Football Patrol seeks pledges

Volunteers with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will be at Fountain Hills High School Friday evening promoting an anti-drug message as part of its third annual “Friday Night Football Patrol.”

Also represented at the event will be 104.7 KISS FM, the Phoenix Army Recruiting Battalion and the Fountain Hills Coalition.

The Falcons will be taking on the Estrella Foothills Wolves.

Prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, patrol volunteers will encourage teens to sign a pledge to maintain an alcohol and drug-free lifestyle and not abuse prescription medications.

Fountain Hills students who sign the pledge will be eligible to win a $500 gift card Friday night, courtesy of this year’s prize sponsor, the Phoenix Army Recruiting Battalion.

Also, the Drug Coalition will be giving away a $50 Sami Fine Jewelry gift card and a $100 prize to a parent who enters the Safe Homes Network that evening.

Friday Night Football Patrol will visit a total of 10 games this season.

“This program has been enormously effective in reaching teens and getting them to commit to making the right choice when it comes to illegal drugs, alcohol and prescription drug abuse,” said County Attorney Bill Montgomery.

The Drug Coalition will have a booth set up at Falcon Field to promote its Safe Homes Network, Text-A-Tip and other local programs designed to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among juveniles.

“We’re pleased that Bill Montgomery and his office are conducting one of their Friday Night Football Patrol programs in Fountain Hills,” said Carole Groux, the coalition’s executive director.

“This will get the attention of many teens.

“The county’s message is the same one we’ve been promoting the past several years – prevention and making smart choices.

“We also thank the School District and high school officials for their cooperation in making this happen.”

Lt. Col. Jennifer McAfee, commander of the Phoenix Army Recruiting Battalion, said, “The Army strongly supports this program in its efforts to help students make the right decision about drugs and understand the damaging ramifications it can have on their future.”

Created in partnership with radio station 104.7 KISS FM, Friday Night Football Patrol has encouraged thousands of students to “take the pledge” against teen substance abuse.

The radio station promotes the program at each game with an on-site DJ, music and live radio call-ins.

Information on helping kids avoid substance abuse is also provided to parents attending games.
