The high school volleyball season is off to a great start, with the defending state champions going 8-1 during their opening week of play, including two regular season victories and a 6-1 showing at the Southwest Challenge weekend tournament.

The season opener against the Payson Longhorns saw the Falcons enjoying a home court advantage to get things rolling, going on to best their opponents in three straight matches, 25-14, 25-20, 25-13.

Game two was on the road, but that didn’t prove to have an impact on the local squad as the Fountain Hills Falcons went on to soar higher than the North Pointe Prep Falcons with a final score of 3-0. The Fountain Hills squad was in total control this outing, winning their matches by scores of 25-13, 25-14, 25-8.

Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1-2, saw the home team hitting the road to take part in the Southwest Challenge.

The Falcons won their first six matches in bracket play, toppling Odyssey Institute 2-0 by scores of 25-18, 25-11.

Buckeye fared a little better against Fountain Hills, managing to get in a match win before suffering a defeat. The match once again went in favor of the Falcons at 2-1, with the local ladies winning match one by a score of 25-4, losing match two at 25-21, and bouncing back to win match three 15-7.

The Falcons kept up their energy in a match against Chandler Prep next, winning 25-13 and 25-12 for another 2-0 tournament victory.

The first day of the tournament concluded with yet another straight sweep from the Falcons, besting Safford 25-8, 25-11.

Into day two and the Falcons were showing no signs of slowing down, earning a win over Agua Fria by scores of 25-16, 25-10.

Next up was Verrado, who lost 25-14 in match one versus Fountain Hills but put up a tremendous fight in match two, eventually falling by a score of 25-23.

The Falcons were finally brought down in a showdown against the Valley Vista Monsoon. Losing match one by a close 25-20, the Falcons bounced back to find a 25-19 win in match two. The teams were well matched and had to go on to a third and final showdown. Valley Vista managed to edge ahead, however, earning the final 15-10 victory and dropping the Falcons from the tournament.

Play continued this past Tuesday, Sept. 5, with a match against Northwest Christian. On Thursday, Sept. 7, the team will head to American Leadership Academy for an outing at 6 p.m.

The team will be back in action next Tuesday, Sept. 12, with a 6 p.m. match at Wickenburg.
