High school golfers Griffin Peters and Lucas Johnson represented the Falcons well over the rainy weekend, taking second place and 29th place respectively at the 2015 state tournament.

The final rounds of golf were hosted out of Antelope Hills up in Prescott, with golfers playing a full 18 holes on each of the site’s courses across Friday and Saturday, May 15-16.

According to head coach Jim Fairfield, the weather turned cold and rainy during Friday’s matches. Despite that fact, however, the Falcons had a standout round of golf.

“At the coaches meeting, we decided that, after we got nine holes in, if the weather got too bad or lightning came in, then we’d call it,” Fairfield said.

“But that didn’t happen.”

According to Fairfield, only half of the golfers got rained on during the first day of play. One group of players began their round at 8 a.m. and wrapped up before the storm hit. The second group, which both of the local players were in, got poured on.

“Our group went out at 11 a.m.,” Fairfield continued.

“It started raining at about 10:45 a.m. and continued the entire time. It was also windy and about 35 degrees out.

“But our guys played outstanding golf in probably the worst weather I’ve ever seen anyone play in.”

After the first round of golf, Lucas Johnson sat at -1 on the day. Peter Griffin finished the day at +1. That put the guys at second and fourth position overall, respectively. Those positions included the morning group, which played in more friendly weather conditions.

“It was amazing,” Fairfield added.

“Everyone was talking about how great they played.”

The second day of play would remain on the upswing for Peters, though Johnson had a tougher go on the course.

Fairfield said it was still chilly and a bit windy on Saturday, but the rain never showed up.

Peters shot +1 the second day, with Johnson slipping behind by quite a few strokes. The event ended with Peters shooting a total of 145 and Johnson shooting 166. That was good enough for a second place final standing for Peters and a 29th final standing for Johnson.

Peters actually finished behind the first place golfer by a single stroke.

“Other than the weather, they put on a good tournament,” Fairfield added.

“It was run well. As for our guys, Johnson was a little upset with his second day, but they were both really happy with their first day of play.

“I was really proud of both of them. It was a good experience.”
