The Fountain Hills Disc Golf Club hosted a successful fundraiser tournament Saturday, May 31, welcoming golfers from around the state to help earn money to provide new tee signs for the local course.
In total, 59 disc golfers made it out for the event, which, according to organizers, exceeded the group’s expectations.
Par for the special 22-hole layout was 66.
“Two interesting holes were an island hole where your drive had to land within a circle and a double mando hole, where your drive had to go between two palm trees that were fairly close together,” explained club member Joe Bill.
“Failure of either of those objectives resulted in a penalty stroke.”
Winners of the Pro, Amateur and Women’s divisions will have their names listed on one of the new tee signs the event helped raise money for, which will help future golfers find their way around the course and learn the layout of each hole.
“Players came from throughout the Valley, as well as from Prescott, Sedona, Maricopa and elsewhere,” Bill continued.
“The cold soft drinks and hot dogs were a hit after the tournament.”
In the Pro division, Jason Barela took first place at 52, or 14 under par. Preston Johnson took 53 with Rory Self at 56.
In the Amateur division, Bill McDonough took first at 54 with Cory Cliff in second with the same score. Mike James was third at 56.
Trina Lettig was first in the Women’s division at 69, with Sara Lange taking second at the same score. Sunalika LaPointe took third at 71.
For the beginners, Bob Rooke took first at 66. Aaron Hickok was second at 70 with David Peace in third at 75.
The event also played host to a closest to the pin hole. Jason Barela won the honor for the Pros on hole 16 with David Razo winning for the Amateurs on hole four; Jim Lynde winning for the second Amateurs hole on number eight; Trina Lettig winning for the Women on number 18; and Travis Carter winning for the Beginners on number 2.
For disc golf fans new and old who live in the area, all are invited to join the weekly blind draw doubles best shot events held Fridays at Fountain Park.
The group meets at the ramada by the splash pad at 4:45 p.m. with tee off at 5 p.m.
