Tolerance?

Posted

I find it disappointing that David Felten, of the local Methodist Church, continues his vicious and disrespectful attacks upon the faith of others.

In the name of tolerance, he helps to provide a forum for Muslims.

Then he turns right around and belittles Christians for what he judges to be “outdated myths like the Virgin Birth.” Although he has the right to believe or disbelieve what he will about the Virgin Mary, does his “tolerance” allow him to throw stones at others simply because they believe differently than he? His hypocrisy is clear for all to see.

His tolerance is very selective, and thus, is not truly tolerance at all. He says “Christianity can’t deal honestly with its outdated dogma.” Jesus taught that we should love God and love our neighbor as our self. Jesus’ dogma of love will never be “outdated,” Felten’s comments notwithstanding.

In his attack, Felten claims that the church remains silent about “economic issues and racial discrimination.” This is another unfounded and untrue attack.

Through our Christian congregation we have built approximately 80 homes for homeless families in Mexico, a community center in Peru and raised money to build approximately 300 wood burning stoves for Peruvian families. We recently raised $30,000 to build a school for children in Uganda and raised tens of thousands of dollars to dig fresh water wells for many communities in Africa.

These gifts cross many racial barriers. These gifts are in response to economic injustice. Many other Christian congregations in our community are engaged in similar projects.

Yet, Felten continues to condemn others simply because of his ignorance of what others are doing. For two millennia Bible- believing churches have built hospitals, schools, orphanages, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and much more. We do so in the name of Jesus.
