Homework gratitude

Posted

My thanks to Lorna Bennett, author of last week’s “Homework” letter to the editor. She raised communication to a new level, using irony to “teach” us about our current president, and warning us to prepare for the next “test,” i.e., the 2016 presidential election.

I applaud Ms. Bennett’s laser-sharp assessment of President Obama’s performance and character. Her language reflects what an objective observer, (hence qualified “teacher”) she is. Her references to President Obama as an “African” and “imposter,” his wife as a “disgruntled citizen” and his mother, grandparents and friends as “communist” were understated and masterful.

Her selection of gerunds to describe Mr. Obama’s behavior was even more impressive: “weakening,” “offending,” “inflaming,” etc. Ms. Bennett is clearly a truth-seeking observer of the political scene, dedicated to presenting information free of partisan bias and racial bigotry.

While she declines to cite her no-doubt vast research sources, I strongly suspect Ms. Bennett’s favored Information Central is Fox News – that bastion of unbiased political reporting.

I would further guess that Ms. Bennett’s support currently goes to Republican hopeful Donald Trump. Mr. Trump is certainly graced with the modesty, ethical standards and caring for our citizenry that would appeal to such a principled assessor of presidential potential.

Ms. Bennett wisely advises us to study “all of the material before the 2016 ‘test.’” Sound homework assignment.

As part of that political preparation, I suggest that we also consider the words of the incomparable Mark Twain – a fellow observer of human misbehavior and partisan shenanigans. Eerily, he seemed to have Ms. Bennett in mind when he said, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please,” and especially, “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”
