Dark skies

I wonder why people move here to a dark skies town, but at night they light up their houses and backyards like Christmas trees.

I cannot see any reason whatsoever for them to do that.

Many times I have gone out to see stars or meteor showers only to keep losing my night vision because of all the lights.
