Wilbur L. Nelson, 87, died on Monday, Dec. 7, at his home in Fountain Hills.

Wilbur was born in Princeton, Ill. to Malcolm and Frances (Lange) Nelson. He attended Princeton schools and was an active Boy Scout for many years.

Wilbur was a member of the Illinois National Guard for nine years and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion.

He married Virginia Swan on July 17, 1949. They were the parents of five children: Wilbur “Bill” (Lina) Nelson II of Princeton, Ill., Beckie (Dave) Dunshee of Henry, Ill., Beth (Rick) Peacock of Princeton, Ill., Barb (Bob) Maubach of Bloomington, Ill. and Bonnie Nelson of Bloomington, Ill. They have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as two step grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Nelson, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Wilbur worked with his brother, Dick Nelson, at Advanced Asphalt building asphalt roads. He and his wife also owned a trucking business for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Marilyn Gonigam and Norma Nelick, three brothers, Robert Nelson, Richard Nelson and Ronald “Butch” Nelson, and a great-grandson, Jonah Maubach.

Wilbur enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in sports. He liked hiking and bowling in Fountain Hills.

He was an active member of Hampshire Colony Congregational Church in Princeton, Ill. and also attended Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church in during the winter months.

A memorial service was held at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Dec. 13. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the church.
