Rose Woodruff

Mrs. Rose Ella King Woodruff passed away on Sept. 22, 2015 in Fountain Hills.

She was born in Louisville, Ky. on Oct. 6, 1921. Along with her parents and two brothers, she moved to Indianapolis, Ind.

Rose taught home economics at George Washington High School and was the head of the Home Economics Department and Dean of Girls at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, Ind.

She then became a Fulbright Exchange teacher in Plymouth, England. Rose married Mr. John Woodruff Sr., an Olympic gold medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

With her husband, she moved to Hightstown, N.J. and was State Supervisor of Home and Consumer Family Education for the New Jersey Department of Education.

While in New Jersey, she worked as a teacher, counselor and program coordinator for the South Brunswick School District until she retired in 1983.

During her retired years, Mrs. Woodruff and her husband moved to Sacramento, Calif. for many years; then back to New Jersey and finally settled in Fountain Hills, Ariz.

Rose was an extensive traveler and spent years seeing the U.S. and the world. She was a leader, inspirer and long-term member of many professional and social organizations, all of which supported the educational, professional and financial needs of others.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. John Woodruff Sr.

She is survived by her step-children, Randi Gilliam and John Woodruff Jr., and step-grandchildren, whom she loved, and many friends and extended family.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Fountain View Village Assisted Living Chapel, 16455 E. Avenue of the Fountains, Fountain Hills (main entrance near flagpole).
